Turning Passion Toward Community

One of the many things I love about Cupcake Girls is our sense of community. The community we have with city of Portland, the people we assist, and the volunteers. I knew from a young age that I loved people. I loved learning about different cultures, my friends, family, and always had a soft spot for the kids that didn’t have a lot of friends. I knew everyone had a story that brought them where they are today. The definition of community is a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of common attitudes, interests, and goals. That is what we are and how we thrive; getting to know our clients and learning their needs, reaching out to local businesses to create partnerships and...

Behind the Scenes

Over the last couple of months, the Operations team with the assistance of other volunteers has tackled various projects in order to further improve the policies and procedures of The Cupcake Girls.  This branch works behind the scenes and therefore many may not be aware of the changes that have taken place.  Here’s what we’ve accomplished at a glance: After collaborating with other directors and staff, including individuals in Las Vegas, The Cupcake Girls has implemented a new volunteer application process.  Starting in July, prospective volunteers have been required to fill out and pass a background check as well as complete a volunteer application before receiving an invitation to...

Portland SlutWalk 2015

This Sunday, September 20th is Portland's annual SlutWalk. What is SlutWalk you may ask? Check out this Q&A with two local activists who are passionately involved in putting together this amazing event. What is the purpose of the event? ELLE: I like to think that we are creating a safe(r) space, and bringing attention to the issue of rape culture. The word “Slut” can bring such a visceral reaction in some folks; I’ve seen people cringe just because of it. And why? The word itself means nothing; it is an intangible, a construct. STERLING: This event is meant to raise awareness around sexualized violence, victim-blaming, slut- shaming, and rape culture in general. Our society is...

Will Run for Cupcakes - Sweet Run 2015

We’re looking for runners (and walkers!) to partner with the Las Vegas team for our annual Sweet Run, happening November 14th and 15th, 2015. What exactly is “The Sweet Run”? Good question! The Sweet run is what we call this fundraiser, which is actually part of the largest race series in the U.S. - The Rock ‘n’ Roll race series. This year is especially exciting because there are even more race options to choose from. You can run or walk a 5k, 10k, half or full marathon. How can I help? We're so glad you asked! You sign up for one of the Las Vegas rock ‘n’ roll races and then set up a fundraiser page to raise money for The Cupcake Girls. It couldn’t be easier! If...

My Portland Summer

This summer I got the privilege of interning with The Cupcake Girls Portland. I had been volunteering with them for about six months prior to my internship, so I really felt like I had a little bit of an understanding of how the organization worked, what their goals were and I was excited to see what this summer had to offer. I was hired on their team as the Chief of Community Development, which meant I saw over Donor Relations, Community Relations, Fundraising and PR/Marketing. In the beginning, Amy, the Portland City Director made it very clear that my internship was not going to be about making copies and fetching coffee. She planned on truly challenging me in this leadership position...
