AVN: Caring for Entertainers at the "Porn Show"

Every January, AVN hosts the largest adult entertainment expo in the world in Las Vegas, NV, attended this year by more than 500 entertainers, 30,000 fans…and 49 staff and volunteers from The Cupcake Girls. While the entertainers are in town to focus on building their business, we’re there for the opportunity to care for them.

Now in our fifth year hosting an entertainers-only relaxation suite, we were thrilled this year to offer more than 350 clients compassionate, agenda-less care. Our spa professionals traveled from all over the country to provide hair and makeup services, and this year we added a fresh smoothie bar, provided thousands of snacks and cups of coffee, and hosted a massage and aromatherapy room, tending to aching feet, ear infections, lost voices, and plenty of general weariness.
What motivates us to attend “the porn show” every year? Are we trying to convert people to some religion? Or rescue them from the industry? Nope. Not even close. We’re just a group of humans who see adult entertainers as humans, too, and believe that getting hurdles out of their way to have the happiest, healthiest lives possible is an opportunity that we are genuinely lucky to help provide. And feedback from both new and returning clients like “oh, I get it, you’re all little angels in black dresses” and “there’s no way I could ever get through this weekend without you” keeps us coming back year after year.
The adult industry is rife with stigma, judgment, and for many of our clients, both short- and long-term consequences that include difficulty getting access to resources or exploring new or additional career opportunities when they (not we) wish to. As a non-religious non-profit organization, the staff and volunteers of The Cupcake Girls believe that every person, regardless of their chosen line of work, deserves respect, safety, and opportunities to pursue their goals. Even more than glamming our clients up during AVN, we are so grateful to have had the chance to educate hundreds of entertainers about the services we provide and refer for year-round, including domestic violence support, mental and medical health care, tutoring, financial advising, and more.
To our volunteers, donors, and clients alike…thank you. And if you haven’t already, please join our mailing list to stay in touch about opportunities to support us at AVN next year.
