Our Relationship Mission

I have been volunteering with The Cupcake Girls PDX since June of 2012. I heard about the organization through friends. My friends told me they were looking for spa professionals to help with an event, which is right up my ally. So I looked up The Cupcake Girls online, immediately filled out an application and waited to attend an orientation. At the orientation, I decided what teams I would like to volunteer on, Direct Care and Special events. I then found out I would not be able to do direct care until after a 90 trial period and more training. Fast forward to November, after months of attending meetings and working multiple events, I got to do my direct care training. December comes and...

The Value of Emotional Support

In working with clients, we encounter various situations daily. Two clients I had been working with recently were struggling with homelessness because of unhealthy relationships. Both were sex workers and primarily in need of emotional support as they made better, healthier decisions to get themselves into stable housing. One client went back to the unhealthy relationship and expressed that her life must be a real mess if staying in a bad relationship is easier than finding a safe place to live. We offered her housing options that she declined, but she stayed in touch to text me about other things. I asked her if she could be somewhere else right now, where would she be? She replied,...

"Why Strippers?"

We get asked this question at almost every event we attend, at least once, but usually several times. It’s a common question, especially in a society that both objectifies and diminishes women. So…why “strippers”? First of all, we don’t really love that word, so you will never hear any Cupcake Girls using it, and we actually work with clients in all aspects of the adult entertainment industry, including people who work at strip clubs, all types of sex workers, and people in the adult film industry. The majority of our clients are women, but we are available and willing to help men & LGBTQ people who work in the adult industry. We happen to believe that everyone deserves to be...

It's a Cupcake Bake Cupcake World

I joined the Cupcake Girls Portland team a year and half ago not only because I believed in the work that this organization is committed to, but also to meet others who were passionate about loving and respecting people unconditionally. In short, I joined because I believe in the power and importance of relationships, relationships with clients and relationships amongst our volunteers. As an organization, building relationships is at the heart of what we do. I, personally, have the privilege of working with my team to provide cupcakes to our clubs every month. Each cupcake we deliver is an opportunity for a relationship to develop and grow, a conversation to start.  In addition, my team...

All You Need is Love...And the Occasional Cupcake

As we come upon the most commercialized holiday of the year, it can be a hard time for some of us. There are flowers, balloons, cards, and candy everywhere. Many television commercials highlight diamonds and romantic surprises. Everyone seems to be in love and happy. Reality, however, is often the total opposite of what we see on TV and around us. Not everyone is happy and in love. We’re not all in amazing relationships. Some of us are divorced, alone, struggling, and feeling the full weight of the holiday in unpleasant ways. Some of us feel hopeless, broken, and even worthless. Here is the good news: while life is not always perfect, we still have the ability to give and receive...

AVN 2015 – Sharing Our Hearts

Everything of value that we will know in this life comes from our relationships with those around us. There is nothing material that measures against the intangibles of love and friendship. ― R.A. Salvatore Relationships are the foundation upon which we build our lives. When we volunteer, we often start out with the intention of helping others, but surprisingly, we find our own lives changed in the process.  The 2015 AVN Cupcake Suite was just that kind of opportunity for our volunteer team. We welcomed over 400 entertainers into our suite for relaxation, food, and complimentary spa services. While we were there to offer love and support to them, our own lives were altered in the best...

Preparing for the AVN Awards

Our motto at The Cupcake Girls is “Respect, Resources, and Relationships.” Because we always strive to provide our clients with the very best we have to offer, we make training volunteers and staff a high priority.   For the past two weeks, Cupcake Girls Las Vegas has been busy preparing for our biggest event of the year – a relaxation suite at The Hard Rock Hotel & Casino for the annual AVN awards.  To make this event a success, it takes an army of volunteers, as well as spa & beauty professionals who are willing to donate their time and talents.  To be fully prepared, we have held three recent training sessions: one for new volunteers, one for volunteers moving into more...

New Year's Resolutions

We are a few days into 2015 and the topic of the hour is probably those pesky New Year’s Resolutions. Maybe you haven’t made any yet or maybe you’ve already broken some of yours. The wonderful thing about goals is that you can set them at any time and decide to keep trying tomorrow no matter what setback comes your way. We all need goals to stay motivated and measure our successes (our directors set goals every month!). The Cupcake Girls offer respect, resources, and relationships to adult entertainers in Portland and Las Vegas through every season and situation.  We want to hear about your resolutions for the coming year and how we can work together to achieve those goals.   We...

A Very Merry Christmas

We went into clubs on Saturday, December 20th for our customary monthly visits, armed with cupcakes and hand-designed Christmas gifts for all of our clients. I connected with several women who had never heard of us before. With these initial interactions, I always emphasize that although we come to the clubs monthly with cupcakes and complimentary hair and make-up services, our main support network for our clients comes from the one-on-one relationships we build as we hear their stories and connect them with any resources they might be looking for. As I was curling someone’s hair, another woman came up to me and started asking more about the services we offer. I was thrilled to expand upon...
