It's Our 6th Birthday!

It’s been six years since I officially launched The Cupcake Girls, and I find that I am still humbled and blown away by what we have been able to accomplish together. It’s been two years since we talked about the anniversary of our founding, and 2015 and 2016 brought tremendous growth to our organization. We have added staff in both cities, and now have a team of social work interns providing support to our clients in ways we only dreamed of in the beginning! LVPD is now calling us to provide aftercare for survivors of domestic sex trafficking, and we have better resources and partnerships in place to provide that care, and so much more. We are on the cusp of opening a resource center to...

In Response to Violence: We Stand With You

With heavy hearts, we are saddened to share that for the past few months we’ve been dealing with an escalating situation involving a former client, which this week resulted in direct and violent threats against The Cupcake Girls’ founder, Joy Hoover and her two year old daughter. At the advice of our attorney, we contacted the police, who saw fit to also involve the FBI. Since our founding, The Cupcake Girls has welcomed opportunities to engage in open dialogue around how to best serve the needs of the adult entertainment community, however intimidation, harassment, and threats will never have any place in a healthy, well-intended, or constructive conversation. We have always backed...

Happy Birthday to The Cupcake Girls Portland!

Today marks the fourth anniversary of The Cupcake Girls Portland.  That’s four years of providing respect, resources, and relationships to adult entertainers in and around Portland, Oregon. We are incredibly grateful for every opportunity to assist these individuals reach their goals at their pace, and in their time. We began the Portland chapter with seven volunteers and I’m excited to say,  that number has expanded to eighty-three. Because of our growing numbers, both in volunteers and clients, we have been able to accomplish an incredible amount this last year.  Already, we've doubled our statistics recorded in 2014!  As I sit here writing this blog, I'm blown away by the...

Will Run for Cupcakes - Sweet Run 2015

We’re looking for runners (and walkers!) to partner with the Las Vegas team for our annual Sweet Run, happening November 14th and 15th, 2015. What exactly is “The Sweet Run”? Good question! The Sweet run is what we call this fundraiser, which is actually part of the largest race series in the U.S. - The Rock ‘n’ Roll race series. This year is especially exciting because there are even more race options to choose from. You can run or walk a 5k, 10k, half or full marathon. How can I help? We're so glad you asked! You sign up for one of the Las Vegas rock ‘n’ roll races and then set up a fundraiser page to raise money for The Cupcake Girls. It couldn’t be easier! If...

Wellness Day 2015

This past Sunday the Portland branch had the opportunity to host a Wellness Day Event for local adult entertainers. You may have noticed that in previous years we have done a Spa Day, but this year we decided to go in a little bit of a different direction. Our vision for the event was not only for our clients to have a day of relaxation but for them to also be able to continue practicing what they learned at the event in their everyday lives. As a staff, we value how important self-care is and that was our inspiration for this event. I believe the majority of us can sometimes forget about self-care, so I think this event was eye opening for not only our clients but also our staff and...

An Invitation to Change the World

My eyes are welling up with tears as I try to share what is weighing on my heart like a ton of bricks. There have been many moments over the past five years when this weight feels like more than I can bear. Many of you don’t really understand the value of what we do, and I know this because the same questions get blurted out every single time I share the message of The Cupcake Girls: “You give cupcakes for strippers, sex workers, and porn stars? Why?” “Certainly there must be better, more important, and more needy causes out there?” I have to be honest with you – as I’ve started this nonprofit and experienced heartaches and setbacks, I’ve had some of the same questions. If I...

Our Goals & Dreams Start Here

This past Wednesday, July 15th, the Portland team hosted our first ever donor event. We invited anyone and everyone who has ever donated to The Cupcake Girls in the Oregon/Washington area. We we’re so excited to finally show off our brand new office space and share our dreams and goals for the future with the people who brought us this far. The night began with mingling over food and drinks, and was followed by a guided office tour. We loved being able to show off our new space to the people who pay for us to be here. What’s special about our shared office space is that we can access it 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. There are private conference rooms where we can have private staff,...

Start Where You Are, Use What You Have, Do What You Can

Pledge your support during our July donor campaign Start Where You Are Since our founding in 2011, and 501(c)(3) designation in 2014, The Cupcake Girls have been providing respect, resources, and relationships to those working in the adult entertainment industry. Our humble beginnings and limited resources have never limited our hearts that are drawn to serve, nor our creativity in using limited funding to provide the best possible care to our clients and community. Use What You Have Our donors have always been the backbone of our organization and allow us to provide services including medical, dental, mental health care, educational assistance, career planning, and domestic violence and...

Call to Action - Help with Kamylla's Legal Fund

We recently became aware of a situation in Texas, about a sex worker named Kamylla, who was part of the A&E Show “8 Minutes” (which we condemned back in April – read our Open Letter). She was portrayed on the show as a sex worker in need of a new life, and that was true, and is even truer now, than before the TV show came into her life. Kamylla found herself in a desperate situation: struggling with health issues and unable to find work, her bills were piling up and she was facing eviction. Desperate, after applying for job after job, she put up an ad to be a sex worker. She said, “I never imagined I would be in such a situation. But I did it for my family. Every night I...

Let's Get Operational

Like many organizations, The Cupcake Girls is a machine with various intricate parts working together to achieve a common goal. It’s not just comprised of volunteers working directly with clients. There are other individuals working behind the scenes to bake cupcakes, assemble gifts, connect with donors, research community resources, coordinate volunteer orientations, and many other things. Each piece of the puzzle is essential, no matter how small the role, and our team is continually striving to create an efficient system that effectively serves the adult entertainment community. To work towards this goal the Portland branch has created an operations team, and while small in...
