Beyond the Bright Lights of Las Vegas

As a Las Vegas native, I grew up surrounded by the sights and sounds of the sex industry. With about 30 strip clubs operating within Las Vegas, and escort services advertised everywhere, I was certain I knew more than the average person about the business. However, I’ve since learned that what I “knew” was based on false assumptions, while turning a blind eye to the need for compassion and support in the adult entertainment community. I feel so fortunate to be able to give back to my city and spread love with The Cupcake Girls. After volunteering on a few different teams, I recently accepted the role of Client Outreach Specialist, which allows me to volunteer my time for our monthly...

Behind the Scenes

Over the last couple of months, the Operations team with the assistance of other volunteers has tackled various projects in order to further improve the policies and procedures of The Cupcake Girls.  This branch works behind the scenes and therefore many may not be aware of the changes that have taken place.  Here’s what we’ve accomplished at a glance: After collaborating with other directors and staff, including individuals in Las Vegas, The Cupcake Girls has implemented a new volunteer application process.  Starting in July, prospective volunteers have been required to fill out and pass a background check as well as complete a volunteer application before receiving an invitation to...

Women Supporting Women- Join us at AVN 2016!

One of the things I love most about The Cupcake Girls is a lot of what we do boils down to women supporting women. We do have male volunteers, male and transgender clients, but 95% of both our volunteers and clients are female. We live in a world where we can see women tearing each other down, whether it be for career choices, differing views on parenting, politics, marriage, etc.  Sometimes it feels the world we live in often revolves around judgment, rather than acceptance, support, and/or encouragement of one another.  Our Cupcake Girls team is filled with women working together to utilize our personal strengths to provide support and resources to people working in the adult industry....

An Invitation to Change the World

My eyes are welling up with tears as I try to share what is weighing on my heart like a ton of bricks. There have been many moments over the past five years when this weight feels like more than I can bear. Many of you don’t really understand the value of what we do, and I know this because the same questions get blurted out every single time I share the message of The Cupcake Girls: “You give cupcakes for strippers, sex workers, and porn stars? Why?” “Certainly there must be better, more important, and more needy causes out there?” I have to be honest with you – as I’ve started this nonprofit and experienced heartaches and setbacks, I’ve had some of the same questions. If I...

Sustainable Secrets

Having been active in volunteer work from the age of fifteen (or maybe younger) I thought I knew a lot about non-profits. I definitely knew a lot about empathy and generosity having worked with so many great organizations and leaders over the past fifteen years. This spirit of generosity I observed in my mentors is initially what compelled me to choose a Portland non -profit to work with when I moved here. What I never realized was how much I would learn about myself from the amazing volunteers and clients of The Cupcake Girls. One of our underlying core values is “self-care.” In over fifteen years of volunteer work I’m not sure why I never heard this term before working with The...

Let's Get Operational

Like many organizations, The Cupcake Girls is a machine with various intricate parts working together to achieve a common goal. It’s not just comprised of volunteers working directly with clients. There are other individuals working behind the scenes to bake cupcakes, assemble gifts, connect with donors, research community resources, coordinate volunteer orientations, and many other things. Each piece of the puzzle is essential, no matter how small the role, and our team is continually striving to create an efficient system that effectively serves the adult entertainment community. To work towards this goal the Portland branch has created an operations team, and while small in...

The Privilege is Mine

I wear a lot of hats as a Cupcake Girls volunteer, but if I am honest, my favorite role is being a part of the direct care team. I visit clubs once a month and I also have clients that I personally make contact with to see how we can meet their needs as an organization. A few weeks ago, we took 300 gifts, flowers, and cupcakes to the clubs for Easter. Sometimes club visits don’t leave us with much time for deep connections, but we never know what might happen when we walk in with a cupcake, a hello, and a warm smile. There are moments, however, when we do make a connection with an entertainer and they become a client. At the very least, they know we can help support them. We had two...

It's a Cupcake Bake Cupcake World

I joined the Cupcake Girls Portland team a year and half ago not only because I believed in the work that this organization is committed to, but also to meet others who were passionate about loving and respecting people unconditionally. In short, I joined because I believe in the power and importance of relationships, relationships with clients and relationships amongst our volunteers. As an organization, building relationships is at the heart of what we do. I, personally, have the privilege of working with my team to provide cupcakes to our clubs every month. Each cupcake we deliver is an opportunity for a relationship to develop and grow, a conversation to start.  In addition, my team...

Direct Care - What it Means

People often wonder what we do as “cupcake girls” and how we assist those in the adult entertainment industry. As the Chief of Direct care, I oversee 4-5 teams of volunteers who work directly with our clients in the Las Vegas community. What does that look like in the day-to-day? I get to the office and answer emails that have come through our website from clients looking for support and services. Several emails each day are resource-related, meaning clients are looking for doctors, lawyers, and (especially right now) tax accountants. For many people, these resources are simple to find through employee benefits and HR departments, but adult entertainers don't have those options. They...

Volunteers Make it Happen

From an early age I felt a pull towards community service; over the years I have dedicated many hours towards various volunteer projects.  I've had the privilege of devoting my free time to a variety of organizations and gained important insight into the inner workings of a non-profit.     Last year I found myself accepting the City Director position of The Cupcake Girls Portland and found myself reflecting upon the lessons I've taken with me through the years.  Through this role, I was handed a immense responsibility and needed to make difficult decisions.  How did I want to fulfill this position?  What are my priorities as City Director?  How do I want this organization...
